If you have lived on the island for more than a summer, you already know the July shape of things. The parade rolls up the Overseas Highway. The dive flags go up on the last Wednesday of the month. The Baker's Cay lot fills earlier every year. What is different in 2026 is the map underneath the routine. The lines on the water at Pennekamp moved on July 1. The parade hits its fiftieth year. And a $52 million project broke ground on Earth Day that will change the front door of the park most weekends here orbit around.
This is the version of the summer for people who are staying. No packing lists, no drive times from Miami. Just the dates, the operators, and what has actually changed since last year.
The two-day sport season is where most residents' summer calendars begin. In 2026 it runs July 29 to 30, the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July, with the Monroe County daily bag limit holding at six per person against twelve elsewhere in Florida. The rules that catch newcomers still apply to everyone: carapace length must be larger than 3 inches, measured in the water, with a measuring device required at all times, and night diving is prohibited in Monroe County during sport season.
What changed this year sits inside John Pennekamp itself. At its August 2025 meeting, the FWC approved changes to the boundary coordinates for seven Coral Formation Protection Zones within John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, revising them to enhance protection of coral reef habitat while increasing access for lobster harvest and trap deployment in areas of seagrass and sand. The updated zones were marked on the water with buoys within the park and went into effect on July 1, 2026. If your regular ledges sat near the old lines, verify against the new buoys before you drop in. Harvest inside the park remains closed during sport season regardless.
For enforcement context, this is not a soft year. In Monroe County during the 2024 mini-season, authorities reported stopping over 600 vessels for safety and resource inspections across the two-day window, and officers issued at least 18 criminal citation notices requiring a court appearance, primarily for undersized lobsters and over-limit catches, with several arrests. The rulebook has not softened since.
The Key Largo July 4 program is the single largest resident event of the year, and the 2026 edition is the 50th Annual 4th of July Parade, running from Anthony's Clothing Store to Laguna Ave. If you have been marking your spot on the Overseas Highway shoulder for a decade, this is the anniversary year to actually stay for the rest of the day.

Most Key Largo weekends touch Pennekamp somewhere, whether that is the boat ramp, the beach at mile marker 102.5, or dinner at a place whose signage still nods to the reef. On April 22, 2026, the Florida State Parks Foundation, Florida State Parks and the Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Discovery Center & Aquarium at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
The scale of what is being built is worth understanding now, because it will shape how the park entrance feels for the next two summers of construction. The facility will feature seven tanks totaling 43,000 gallons, anchored by a 23,000-gallon tank devoted to Florida's Coral Reef, the only living coral barrier reef along the coast of North America, and is scheduled to open in fall 2028. Baseline for comparison: the current visitor center holds a 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium. The new centerpiece tank alone is nearly three quarters of that. For a park that draws approximately 400,000 visitors each year to explore Florida's Coral Reef and surrounding ecosystems via boat tours, paddling trails, scuba diving, snorkeling and swimming, the arithmetic on foot traffic through the new center is going to be significant, and the summer of 2028 is when residents should expect the visitor footprint to change in earnest.
For 2026 and 2027, the park continues to run normally. The Monday evening lecture series continues, including a July 27 talk with Liah Continentino of UF/IFAS Extension Monroe County on pollinator gardening as a conservation strategy, and the Coral Cam livestream is running for the days you would rather stay dry.

The one operational note residents should carry into July: Snappers is a landmark oceanside restaurant and watering hole where food and drinks have been served on those grounds since the 1960s, and it has held its place as a cornerstone of the Keys' dining and social scene for over 40 years. It is the closest thing the island has to a default answer when a plan collapses.
Once the sport season crowds clear out and the regular August 6 through March 31, 2027 lobster season opens, the next dated event on the island is worth putting on the calendar even if you are not competing. The Game On! Key Largo Triathlon runs Sunday, August 16, 2026, at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, with Olympic and Sprint distance triathlon, duathlon and an Olympic distance Aquabike race. The bike course uses Overseas Highway and Card Sound Road, out and back, which means a genuine traffic and cyclist presence through the residential stretch of the island for most of that Sunday morning. Three separate developments landed on Key Largo inside the same July: a redrawn set of coral protection lines, the fiftieth run of the parade, and the beginning of a nine-figure capital project inside the park most residents use as their default weekend anchor. None of them require you to change what you already do. All of them will reshape the version of the island your neighbors describe five years from now.
